If you aren't aware of social media and the power it holds over people, I'd suggest you must be from an even more remote part of the Universe than me..!
Social media has become an intrinsic part of daily life for the majority of people around the world, so it goes without saying that businesses also use it to grow their online presence. While most business owners understand that social media is important, I'm going to highlight exactly why in the rest of this article.
1) Brand Authority & Credibility
Imagine you're looking for a place to get your spaceship cleaned. You find two different companies; both have websites and similar pricing structures etc. Jupiter Ship Cleaning display a phone number for you to call to book your ship in for cleaning, whereas Neptune Dry Dock not only display a phone number but they also have links to their Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and Pinterest pages clearly displayed in their website's header on their "Contact Us" page. You click into their Google+ and see some recent favourable reviews. You click into Facebook, and there are posts from customers asking questions and making comments, all of which have been replied to by Neptune themselves. You take a look at Twitter and again, every Tweet has a response, and Neptune have been tweeting thanking every new follower.
Which one would you choose? Being active and engaging on social media can make *all* the difference when someone is weighing up your business against the competition.
2) Traffic Generation
There are no tricks to this; the fact is that by posting relevant and engaging content on social media, you will see more and more people following you, and in turn, more of your followers clicking through to your website to view and buy your products or services.
Something that people can get hung up on is having a larger number of followers than their rivals. That's actually a false economy, as you're much better off having a concise following who engage with and buy from you, rather than a small army of people who aren't really interested in what you're saying and are far less likely to visit your website.
3) Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
That's right; being active on social media does have a positive impact on your website's search engine performance.
All the major search engines look at social media data as part of their algorithm's that determine your website's natural ranking on their search engine results pages (SERP). Pages that are shared around on social media build up trust with search engines, and because these search engines want to provide the best results for their users, the more frequently your content gets shared on social media, the better chance your website has of ranking highly.
Last, but certainly not least, is customer engagement. Nowadays, a lot of people like to reach out to companies online rather than having to phone or email in with their enquiry. Live Chat has become more and more popular as time has gone by (I can name three planets inhabited solely by chat bots!), but social media is by far the easiest way for people to engage with your business online. Linking closely with point no. 1 regarding brand authority and the credibility of your business as a whole, a business which actively engages with it's social media following will more often than not steal the sales away from those who don't.
People like to know that they can easily get hold of a company for a multitude of reasons; maybe they need some quick after-sales support, or perhaps they need the piece of mind that you're there in case something goes wrong with their order. Regardless of your industry, being active and engaging with people on social media can only mean good things for your business!
